Past Projects
What do you do all day?
We get this question a lot. The great part is that every day is different. Rotation sponsors do a phenomenal job of ensuring we receive challenging projects that test our capabilities and provide real value to the organization.
Some days, we'll model different scenarios to determine what will happen to cash balances. Some days, we'll put together slide decks to present at executive meetings.
Other times, we find ourselves diving deep into financial data in order to solve problems, while other days we work collaboratively to envision and pitch a solution.
Occasionally, we work at the hospital, while other days we head to meetings all over campus.
We always enjoy working in a program that provides meaningful, structured projects with enough flexibility to allow us to grow.
A lot of our favorite projects involve the creation of new tools and methodologies
Created and presented an information package for the Chief Revenue Officer mapping out the process flow of the Michigan Medicaid supplemental payment program and conducting analysis of revenue streams for the program. This work also led us to refine our current allocation methodology so that payments received through this program are more accurately distributed.
Visualized, pitched, and managed the creation of a research dashboard for the basic science departments. The project involved gathering data from multiple areas, such as research awards, financial data, square footage information, and workforce data, and consolidating it all into a visually appealing, and easy to understand tool. The large scope of the project and the potential time savings for the end users made the project both a challenging and rewarding one.
Created a three-level income statement in Tableau for a department. The product split the department income statement by faculty member, allowing it to be filtered based on various faculty characteristics. This faculty-characteristic split allowed the third level, a “What-If” tool forecasting departmental impact of faculty changes, to assist with department planning conversations. The FDP analyst created this product in an iterative manner, developing materials based on conversations with leadership and then obtaining feedback from the Chief Department Administrator, Finance Manager, and Department Chair along the way.
Improved the process and dashboard that displays financials of the institution at a mission-based level. Michigan Medicine has a tripartite mission that emphasizes the organization's commitment to patient care, research, and education. This dashboard allowed leadership across the organization to view financials in this manner at the Medical School level, department level, and at an institutional level. This project has continuously grown over the last decade and the continuous improvements are providing incremental increases in value to the organization each year.
