Welcome to the Finance Development Program!
Michigan Medicine is a premier Academic Medical Center with a tripartite mission of patient care, research, and higher education. As a leading organization within our industry, we are able to provide an abundance of strong career opportunities and the Finance Development Program (FDP) is consistently praised as one of the strongest entry-level experiences at the University of Michigan.
The FDP was created in 2013 and launched in 2014 with the primary objective to create early career opportunities that position young talent to be our future financial leaders.
After a great deal of research, we modeled our program off of the most desirable rotational programs across the nation. Additionally, there was a great deal of personal reflection that fueled the final program design by deeply questioning the experiences that I wish I would have had in my first position out of college. Not surprisingly, it was the same wish list that many of my classmates wanted but were also not getting in their first jobs. I was determined to change that with this program!
As a result, we offer robust work experiences, challenging assignments, exposure to senior leaders, mentoring, competency development, a strong support system, and a community of young professionals that extends beyond the work day.
But there are two characteristics that truly set us apart from other strong rotational programs:
First, young professionals can be part of the leadership equation long before a formal leadership title is earned. You will interact and gain skills with many opportunities to lead. You will lead in ways that create a direction, build commitment, drive organizational alignment and, most importantly, you will have a chance to influence and build on the direction of the FDP itself from day one.
Second, you will receive early career engagement from senior leaders who are truly invested in YOU. Even in your first professional position, internship or full-time, we are all unique and have strengths and opportunities to share with our organization. Our leadership journeys are as unique as we are and this program tailors the development to your specific needs and desires and is not a prescriptive plan. Each FDP candidate receives a customized approach.
If this sounds like what you are looking for to jump start your career and be part of a high-performing team, I strongly encourage you to apply or reach out to us to learn more. It won’t take long for you to find out our program offers a truly unparalleled experience.
GO BLUE!

Recent undergraduates with an interest in finance, consulting, and healthcare
Rotations and responsibilities are dynamic in nature based on each individual’s interests and competencies, but all participants will encounter a diverse financial, analytical, and consultative rotation experience. The program boasts a fast-paced culture with projects of varying lengths, though the typical framework is four six-month rotations
FDP analysts interact with, present to, and learn from Michigan Medicine management and executives regularly in order to prepare for future leadership roles
The skills developed within the program set FDP members apart from other job applicants later in their careers. After the two-year program ends, FDP members will have amassed a breadth of connections and knowledge that rivals several years of standard job experience
Rising seniors interested in learning corporate finance, internal consulting, and healthcare operations skills that will allow them to succeed in their chosen profession upon graduation
The program consists of several short rotations within different departments of Michigan Medicine Central Finance, combining real business needs with candidate skill sets and preferences to form a meaningful development experience
Interns create different types of deliverables and present them to various institutional stakeholders, including Michigan Medicine's CFO, associate CFO's, and department directors
A balance of high-level work with social events, team-bonding activities, and health system tours provides an environment where interns can develop professionally while also enjoying the summer and creating connections that will extend far past the completion of the internship
Throughout the duration of the program, interns develop the finance, consulting, and leadership skills necessary for future career success while also gaining a comprehensive understanding of healthcare that few institutions or companies can provide

The FDP acknowledges that teamwork and collaborative effort are essential for success. With that in mind, the FDP focuses on team chemistry and coordinating team building events outside of the office. Past events have included team kayak races, scavenger hunts, rope and obstacle courses, paint and pour, happy hours, bowling, softball games, escape rooms, and more.
